Date Elementary School is a K-6 public school including a county run "Healthy Start" center, day-care, and a police substation for site security. The school is located in a low income urban area. A secure school site was of the utmost importance to the District. The site selected by the District was a smaller than desired in-fill site, which required parking for 108 cars on the roof to save space.
The school includes many functions not normally associated with an elementary school, such as Preschool, Day-care, Health Services for both students and community, Adult Education, and Community Multi-Purpose area.
Buildings are constructed of concrete masonry and cast-in-place concrete. The building mass, along with the shading created by the cars parked on the roof allow heat gain to build slowly, thus reducing the cooling requirements for the buildings.
