Fremont Elementary School

Santa Ana Unified School District - Santa Ana, California

When given a 2.8 acre site adjacent to a city park and told to provide a full size elementary school, one would, at first, think its impossible. The design solution here was to lower the building half a floor into the site, and locate the school's playground on the roof. The poured-in-place concrete playground creates a heat sink which causes a heat transfer lag in the occupied spaces until well after school ends. The insulating quality of the underground walls requires less heat to warm the space in the morning. The overall cooling load was reduced by approximately 34 tons.
